Portable LED Lights For NDT Weld Inspections
Inspections are crucial to the seaworthiness of large commercial vessels. Due to the rugged nature of the ocean, corrosion is often one of the main reasons for equipment malfunction or deterioration.
To prevent such occurrences from causing delays, shipyard inspectors must verify the accuracy and thoroughness of welding jobs performed during maintenance. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a common method used by industrial inspectors, when checking for inconsistencies on surfaces, which could be a sealed hole where gas or liquids could escape resulting in a leak.
Improving Detection with Portable LED Lights
Shipyard inspections are classified as temporary tasks performed periodically on parts of a vessel that has been damaged or repaired. Portable LED luminaries, such as drop lights, flashlights, magnetic mount lights and cart-mounted lights, are often utilized to streamline weld inspections. These units can be low voltage to meet the safety regulations on the site, extended with a heavy-duty power cord or battery powered.
It is common practice for NDT inspectors to take images of compromised surfaces for evidence of damage. This makes LEDs with exceptional CRI and high color temperature ratings important, as such factors could improve image clarity (newer x-ray devices for NDT in shipyards are capable of capturing images in real-time).
Illumination for X-ray NDT
Portable X-ray machines are frequently used in shipyard NDT. The cutting-edge devices are capable of detecting critical defects, loose fusion and etc. However, due to the risk of radiation, such tasks are carried out at night to reduce unwanted exposure to radioactive particles. This allows NDT inspectors to complete such tasks faster, with less disturbances at the facility.
Because NDT that involves x-ray units (usually portable, wireless and battery powered, so that it can reach elevated sections of the boat) are performed at night, temporary lighting systems should be deployed in the surrounding area for illuminative support.
